Manufacturing Education Program
GM Manufacturing Scholarship
Information & Application Form
This program is sponsored by General Motors (GM) to encourage top graduate students to pursue professional careers in manufacturing, recognize their academic efforts, and help defray their cost of study. These scholarships are available on a competitive basis to students enrolled in the Manufacturing Education Program (MEP).
The GM Manufacturing Scholar appointments are for up to one year. Scholar appointments are not renewable. Students at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is normally the first Friday in February of each year; however, the deadline has been extended to Friday, February 27, 2009 for this year's competition. Decisions will be made within eight weeks following the application deadline. Scholarships will start in the Fall semester. Postponement of GM Manufacturing Scholar funding can be considered, if a student performs an internship during the year of the Scholarship.
GM Manufacturing Scholars are required to complete the Manufacturing Certificate. They must register for a minimum of twelve hours per semester of letter-grade coursework and/or thesis/dissertation hours (audit hours do not count).
GM Manufacturing Scholars will receive stipends at a rate of $750 per month for 9-12 months. Travel funds may also be available for students participating in the International Option of the MEP. Faculty members supervising the Scholars' research may receive partial travel support to the students' sites. The GM Manufacturing Scholars will be invited to participate in various GM functions on the Georgia Tech campus, as well as visits to GM locations to interact with the sponsor. The Scholars are also required to prepare two 6-month status reports for submission to the MEP office and GM.
Applicants should complete a scholarship application form, an MEP enrollment form (if not already enrolled in the program), and write an essay highlighting their relevant experiences and their ambitions for their participation in the program. Elements of interest in the essay would include reasons for interest in being appointed as a GM scholar, perception of GM as a manufacturing-focused company, career planning relevant to the vision and expectations of GM, expected contributions by the applicant to the general field of manufacturing, and how the GM Manufacturing Scholarship would impact his/her academic goals. A description of the applicant's thesis research project, if applicable, should also be included in the essay. The essay should not exceed 1,500 words in length. Copies of transcripts of all post-high school education (including your most recent Georgia Tech transcript), and at least two letters of recommendation must be included. Applicants must also pass a GM online behavior inventory, of which instructions will be e-mailed to the students upon receipt of their application forms. All hard-copy documents should be turned in to Dr. Shreyes Melkote or Ms. Pamela Rountree, Room 380, Manufacturing Research Center (MARC), Mail Code 0560. E-mailed application forms are not acceptable.
